We are well into our second week back from Winter Break, and I am just thrilled with the progress our fifth graders are making! I love the second half of fifth grade -- students are becoming more mature and taking ownership of their learning!
Today we discussed some behaviors that show we are in charge of our own learning. We also look at online resources and methods for how we can reinforce our learning on our own, including Kahn Academy, which is a wonderful free resource to reinforce our math lessons.
We have also been working on our reading behaviors and applying those our book club reading as well as our free choice books. Students have set a goal for the area in their reading they want to improve and are practicing that in their two books. Be sure to ask your child about their book club. We have been having some awesome conversations in class!
We are also sharing a read aloud with all of 4th and 5th grade. Wonder, by RJ Palacio is one of my all-time favorite middle grade novels. It is the inspiring story of a 5th grade boy named August who goes to school for the first time in the face of some serious adversity. The students are enthralled with the story, and we are learning some major life lessons. Please talk with your student about this book -- I assure you they will have plenty to say!
Finally, we recognized a couple of our hardest working students this morning. As always, I am blessed with such motivated scholars that making a decision was challenging, but Logan and Hope were recognized for their effort, behavior, and attitude on a daily basis!
Here are some pictures of the goings-on of late in fifth grade:
