Today we had an exploratory experiment working with different kinds of matter. Using a pan balance and gram masses, students compared the mass of solids (ice, rubber ball), liquids (water, corn syrup), and gases (air). We also made notes on the properties of each matter. We are continuing to learn a lot about executing an experiment using the scientific method. This was a wonderful introductory activity to our chapter on different kinds of matter!
One of the Power Standards we are focusing on is place value. We learned how to place a game called "Number Top It" to help practice this skill. We quickly noticed, however, that the game was too easy for our class. So we used a small whiteboard to expand the game and make it more challenging! On Friday, we did our first science experiment. We were practicing the Scientific Method, and used the "Water Drop Experiment" to review the steps. We were shocked to find out how many drops of water can fit on the head of a penny! Witnessing the surface tension was really interesting. Fifth grade has gotten off to a great start! We have spent the past few days organizing supplies and doing introductory activities. We have been working hard on building a team atmosphere in the classroom. This will help to ensure that our group work throughout the year is successful, and that all students feel comfortable in our classroom. Yesterday, we participated in a fun activity that involved cups, string, and rubber bands. This really tested our ability to communicate and work as teams! I am so glad that you are in my class. I can't wait to get started with the year!
