Fifth grade has been a flurry of activity this week. We continue to work on fractions as we are developing our base of knowledge that will help us throughout the rest of the year in math! We also worked on planning a Thanksgiving meal on a budget, which allowed us to practice adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals. The students were shocked at how much work planning a meal can be -- especially when we don't have unlimited funds!
We have also finished writing our personal narratives. We focused on including vivid sensory details and writing a coherent story that focused on an important object, lesson, or memory from one's life. Look for updates on students' blogs to see what they wrote!
In P.E., the students have been working on basketball skills. Wrapping up the unit, there was a whole 5th grade competition in a game called 9-hole, which focuses on shooting accuracy. The finals were held today and our classroom winner, Kole, was the champion for the entire 5th grade! Congratulations, Kole!
Two of our students were also recognized for being the BEST in the classroom, on the playground, and around the school. These kids are friendly to everyone and can often be seen going out of their way to help other students. Maddie and Zach are great representatives for our classroom this month. We're proud of you!
We also wrapped up our literacy unit focusing on how America was formed. For Inquiry, we worked in small groups to write a skit to show how one event was important to our history. We quickly found out how difficult it can be to write a play, especially to include what we have learned through our research. The skits were wonderfully done, and we were even able to share them with a 4th grade classroom. Be sure to go to the students' blogs to see their video!
As we wrap up this week, I must say how thankful I am to have a class full of such hardworking, caring people! These 5th graders have grown so much already, and I can't wait to see what they continue to accomplish!
