With the trimester ending, report cards, and conferences, it has been too long since I posted. My apologies!
We've been doing some great things in fifth grade. In literacy, we have been working on asking and answering questions while we read, which is connected to our other focus-skill which is monitoring comprehension. Students have been practicing writing thin and thick questions as they read, and we've just begun looking at prompting higher order thinking within ourselves as readers.
In addition to working on the skills and strategies that good readers use, there has been a renewed focus in our classroom on embracing a love for reading. Students are finding books they love and are sharing recommendations and reviews with one another (and me!). It's so great to see a room full of students engaged with books and celebrating when we have individual reading time. Not to mention a few frustrated looks when I have to make them stop!
Today we read a book by William Joyce called, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore. We also watched the award winning short film adaptation. Watch it here. The students were enthralled with the story and did a wonderful job discussing what it meant to them and the power that books can have in our lives. This is one of my favorite stories, and I was so glad the students enjoyed it, as well!
We have also gotten our student blogs up and running! Be sure to check out the link on the left and see what the kids are up to!
